Buffalo’s Fire to record family histories during Greasy Grass commemoration

Buffalo’s Fire will record family histories during the 150th anniversary of the Battle of the Greasy Grass, scheduled for June 24-26, 2026, according to an event announcement. The news organization plans to establish a recording location in the main tipi encampment and will work with Grey Willow Studios to document stories.

Family stories will be recorded in pairs. Buffalo’s Fire is inviting families, descendants, veterans and visitors to share oral histories during the commemoration. The project aims to preserve those stories for future generations. The Indigenous Media Freedom Alliance, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, publishes Buffalo’s Fire News, according to the announcement.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we exist to illuminate tribal government decision-making for everyone who cares about transparency about Native issues. Our work bridges the gap left by tribe-controlled media and non-Native, extractive journalism, providing the insights necessary for informed choices and a better quality of life. Because the consequences of restricted press freedom affect our communities every day, our trauma-informed reporting is rooted in a deep, firsthand expertise.
