Sbc To Host Red Sand Event For Human Trafficking Awareness
Public art installation on April 7 highlights vulnerable populations falling through society's cracks

SBC will host a Red Sand Event at noon on April 7 outside the science and tech center and student services sidewalk to raise awareness about human trafficking. Participants are invited to stop by and pour red sand into the pavement's cracks, a simple yet powerful public art installation designed to shine a light on those who are too often unseen. Organizers hope the participatory gathering will turn awareness into action and encourage attendees to be good relatives to the community's most vulnerable.
The local gathering is part of Molly Gochman’s national Red Sand Project, which creates visual representations of individuals who fall through the cracks of society. The installation carries significant local weight, as North Dakota is considered a high-risk area for human trafficking due to oil development, rural isolation and major highway corridors. Additionally, data from the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center notes that Native American women and girls are disproportionately impacted by the violence and exploitation the event seeks to highlight.
