The North Dakota News Cooperative (NDNC) announced today that Forum Communications Co., the North Dakota Broadcasters Association and the North Dakota Petroleum Council are the founding sponsors of the North Dakota Poll (ND Poll), a new public opinion research service conducted by the NDNC.

“These three organizations share our passion for the importance of understanding that all North Dakota voices should be heard on the important issues facing our state,” said Steve Andrist of Bismarck, co-chair of NDNC.

“This four-way partnership provides the opportunity to learn about public opinion and to provide news reporting about it in hopes of bringing people, communities and the state together.”

The first ND Poll will be launched Nov. 5, 2023, exactly one year before the 2024 general election. Results are expected to be released statewide beginning Nov. 14, 2023. NDNC Journalist Michael Standaert will report on the results in stories published by North Dakota newspapers and broadcasters and at www.newscoop.org. The survey will include job approval ratings for a variety of North Dakota elected officials and governmental entities along with the public’s reaction to specific ballot measure provisions being proposed.

“We are already planning our next poll which should go into the field in February following the New Hampshire primary,” said Jill Denning Gackle of Garrison, NDNC co-chair. “We welcome anyone interested in becoming a future sponsor of the ND Poll and having their questions presented to the public to contact us for more details.”

Each ND Poll will survey a random sample of 500 adults who have voted in past North Dakota elections and voters who are now eligible to vote. Of the total sample size of 500, a subsample of approximately 315 will be “likely” voters based on their previous voting history. The sample size of n=500 will have a margin of error of +/- 4.4% in 95 out of 100 cases and the subsample n=315 will have a margin of error of +/- 5.5% in 95 out of 100 cases.

The North Dakota News Cooperative (NDNC) is a new non-profit news organization providing reliable and independent reporting on issues and events that impact the lives of North Dakotans. The organization increases the public’s access to quality journalism and advances news literacy across the state.
