Murkowski, Downing introduce bill to reauthorize NAHASDA

Legislation would update federal tribal housing law that has lacked authorization since 2013

May 8, 2026

Sen. Lisa Murkowski and Rep. Troy Downing introduced legislation to reauthorize and modernize the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition. The law, known as NAHASDA, governs federal housing programs for tribal communities and has not been reauthorized by Congress since 2013, though funding has continued through annual appropriations.

According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, the legislation would update housing programs serving tribal nations and Tribally Designated Housing Entities. Murkowski, chair of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, introduced the “Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Modernization Act of 2026,” while Downing introduced a House version titled the “Native American Housing and Self-Determination Modernization Act.” The National Low Income Housing Coalition said it joined a letter led by the National Congress of American Indians urging Congress to reauthorize NAHASDA.
