Northern Arapaho Tribe tears out driveway to controversial evangelical church
Citizens celebrated the demolition
Northern Arapaho Tribe leaders used heavy construction equipment to remove the road to the entrance of Foundations For Nations, an evangelical church that incited controversy in July when its pastor Sarah Lucas made comments about traditional ceremonies like the Sun Dance that community members called intolerant.
The church is on private property within the Wind River Reservation boundaries. Church leaders refused repeated requests to leave. On Thursday, one access point was removed but people can still get to the church by a different road.
According to Cowboy State Daily, the tribe held no public hearing about the decision to remove the road. Several people from Northern Arapaho cheered as a culvert was removed and leaders planted the tribe’s flag at the demolition site. Bureau of Indian Affairs officers were on scene to observe, and the Wyoming officials said the matter remains tribal.
Lucas did not respond to comments from the Cowboy Daily Star.
