Ponca Tribe to participate in Genoa U.S. Indian School Recognition and Remembrance Day on Sept. 26

Nebraska was home to one of the largest Indian boarding schools in United States history.

The Genoa U.S. Indian School operated from 1884 until 1934 where more than 4,300 Native students were taken from their homes to the school site.

On Sept. 26 the site will host the 36th annual recognition and remembrance ceremony to honor the children that attended the school.

A panel on the site’s history will include speakers from across Indian Country. Aaron LaPointe (Winnebago), Dr. Kateri Hinman Petto (Omaha, Winnebago and Seneca Tribes) and Alexis Zendejas (Omaha Tribe) will speak.
