Two pueblos seek to join Navajo Nation suit over Chaco Canyon land ban

February 26, 2025

The Pueblo of Acoma and the Pueblo of Laguna are seeking to intervene in the Navajo Nation’s lawsuit challenging a Biden administration order that bans new mineral leasing near Chaco Canyon. The pueblos argue the lawsuit threatens their cultural and historical ties to the land. The Navajo Nation opposes the 20-year ban, citing financial hardship for tribal allottees, while the pueblos emphasize the need to protect sacred sites. A federal judge will decide whether they can join the case.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we exist to illuminate tribal government for everyone who cares about transparency in Native issues. Our work bridges the gap left by tribal-controlled media and non-Native, extractive journalism, providing the insights necessary for truly informed decision-making and a better quality of life. Because the consequences of restricted press freedom affect our communities every day, our trauma-informed reporting is rooted in a deep, firsthand expertise.
