Tsawwassen First Nation Chief Kim Baird upset in bid for re-election

ROD MICKLEBURGHVancouver — The Globe and MailPublished Thursday, Sep. 06 2012

Chief Kim Baird, who has presided over the Tsawwassen First NationÂ’s ambitious urban treaty and development plans, suffered a shock defeat Wednesday, as she was upset by young challenger Bryce Williams in her bid for a seventh term.

Mr. Williams, a carver in his early 20Â’s, had been a member of the TFNÂ’s executive for the past three years.

Although official results were not immediately available, Ms. Baird announced her defeat on Twitter shortly after 10 p.m. PST, with the simple words: “I lost.”

Earlier in the evening, she tweeted that she was trailing Mr. Williams by three votes.

Although Mr. Williams did not campaign against them, Ms. BairdÂ’s defeat, given her opponentÂ’s relative inexperience, calls into question the future of a 4,000-resident subdivision for the TFN, already under construction, and two large shopping malls, scheduled to be completed in 2015.
