Untruths in political election ads

Insult to Washington voters

As a recent newcomer to Washington, I am appalled at the blatant lies that appear in the advertisements of candidates from both major parties [“What should a voter believe? Not much in nasty AG ads,” page one, Oct. 26].

These lies are an insult to the intelligence of the Washington voter. Certainly Washington voters deserve better.

Political ads have gotten worse

Thanks for The Times'”Truth Squad” articles, but I wonder how many really believe those insulting political ads. How did we get so far from Harry Truman’s campaigning from the back of a train and “I like Ike” commercials, to innuendos and falsehoods about our political candidates?

Do voters really believe the bombardment on TV, radio, newspapers, tweets and Facebook are true or just gossip? Isn’t it time to stop this inane spending to garner votes? A billion dollars could have been far better used for many of our nation’s needs.

Truth can’t guide us anymore

Thank you, Danny Westneat, for the column “It’s a race to the bottom” [NWWednesday, Oct. 24]. My struggle to vote revolves around the very issues brought up in making my decisions. It has become “which party’s lies do the least damage to the opponent and therefore may deserve my vote?”

You see, it seems we can no longer count on the truth to guide us. My vote then becomes “which lie and group of liars are the worst,” so I’ll vote against them.

One name stands out significantly: Carl Rove has been around long enough for most of us to see his crafty works. The Republican Party does not seem to mind being represented by his kind or they could have stopped him. Until they do, I remain an Independent always voting Democrat. I do see some good Republicans out there but voting for them would only harden the process.

I thank God that The Seattle Times is committed to trying to help us find the truth about the issues and candidates.
