Spotted Bear-Soboleff report calls on federal lawmakers to support positive growth of Native youth

A report on the overall health and well-being of Native children is heading to President Joe Biden’s desk.

On Feb. 20, the Alyce Spotted Bear and Walter Soboleff Commission on Native Children published its study looking at areas affecting youth.

Some of the issues in the 258-page report include recommendations for

child health and welfare, juvenile justice, and education.

One proposal would require environmental impact health assessments to reduce overall risk.

The report cites possible links to chemical contamination from fracking and uranium mining to the high rates of miscarriage and certain cancers among some Great Plains Tribes.

In its letter to President Biden, the commission stated that the recommendations, if put into use, would transform outcomes for Native children’s futures.
