Brian Bull wins prestigious Edward R. Murrow journalism awards
You may have noticed that Buffalo’s Fire recently started incorporating audio and video into its reporting. That’s largely a result of Brian Bull joining our team as a senior reporter. Before he joined our staff in April, Brian taught audio storytelling at the University of Oregon and spent decades reporting for public media.
On Monday, two of Brian’s audio stories for KLCC, an NPR affiliate in Eugene, Oregon, were recognized with regional Edward R. Murrow awards, one for excellence in sound and the other for excellence in writing.
“Our team is celebrating Brian’s win with him,” said Jodi Rave Spotted Bear, executive director of the Indigenous Media Freedom Alliance, the publisher of Buffalo’s Fire. “His awards exemplify the high quality of storytelling he now brings to Buffalo’s Fire. Our audience can expect more great stories from a trusted journalist.”
Bull reported the winning stories in September 2024. He is now the recipient of a total of 24 regional and four national Murrow awards.
“I’m very honored to receive these awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association,” said Bull. “I enjoy radio journalism because it ties into my love for oral narrative, which was a huge part of our earliest Native traditions for the Nez Perce and other nations. I look forward to continuing my work with Buffalo’s Fire to incorporate more multimedia elements of our news coverage, and appreciate everyone’s support and eagerness while I explore this extension of our storytelling.”
