Editor/Reporter Wanted

Society of Professional Journalists

FairWarning (www.fairwarning.org), a nonprofit investigative news organization based in Southern California, is seeking an editor/reporter to join our small, hard-working team. We’re looking for a dedicated team player who shares our sense of mission, with strong news judgment, a deft writing touch and a demonstrated ability to handle detailed investigative and explanatory stories, both as an editor and reporter.

FairWarning is nearing our 11th anniversary. We produce deeply reported stories that appear on our website and in print, online and broadcast editions of dozens of media outlets across the country. We focus on public health, consumer, labor and environmental issues, and related topics of government and business accountability.

Candidates should be able to take the lead in editing stories assigned to them, both in-depth stories and shorter turnarounds; work one-on-one with reporters and freelancers to shape drafts, and help to edit a weekly newsletter. The job will require both editing and reporting, with more time devoted to editing.

Applicants should have a minimum of eight years of professional journalism experience, including newsroom experience. Candidates who live in Southern California or are able to relocate here may get preference. A background in the issues we cover is a big plus.

Before applying, please check out our website and the kinds of stories we do. Then, if you think you’re the one we’re looking for, please send a resume, short cover letter and three strong clips by December 18 to jobs@fairwarning.org
