Native Youth Fashion Bootcamp To Offer Design Training In Helena

A three-day program will teach Native youth fashion design, sewing and runway skills ahead of a community fashion showcase

Native youth fashion bootcamp to offer design training in Helena

The Steeped in Fashion Bootcamp will take place June 24-26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day for Native youth in grades 6-12, according to information provided by the organizers. Participants will learn fashion design, sewing and runway fundamentals from Native fashion designer Rebekah Jarvey. Organizers said youth will create their own clothing designs using sewing machines, hand-sewing and other techniques and will learn how to model and present their work.

Participants' designs will be featured during the Steeped in Fashion Show on June 27. The bootcamp will also include education on the harms of drugs, alcohol and vaping, along with overdose prevention, suicide prevention and mental health awareness. Organizers said lunch and snacks will be provided daily and participation is open to Native American youth who are enrolled, descendants or identify as Native American.

We provide the independent reporting that non-Native, extractive outlets often overlook. We give our communities the context and the facts they need to make informed decisions.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we exist to illuminate tribal government decision-making for everyone who cares about transparency about Native issues. Because the consequences of restricted press freedom affect our communities every day, our trauma-informed reporting is rooted in a deep, firsthand expertise. Every gift helps keep the fire burning. A monthly contribution makes the biggest impact.
