Natural resources drive almost 20% of Canada’s economy, Ottawa saysYadullah Hussain | Sep 4, 2012TORONTO • Joe Oliver wants Canadians to know Ottawa is not just about supporting bitumen production and pipeline projects and indirectly hurting Ontario manufacturers — the Department of Natural Resources presides over almost a fifth of the Canadian economy.Latest figures parsed by Mr. Oliver’s department shows the sector contributed 15% directly to Canada’s nominal GDP and another 4% indirectly last year. The sector, comprising energy, forestry, metals and minerals, provided 800,000 direct jobs and an additional 800,000 in indirect jobs — or 10% of the country’s overall employment.“It’s not all oil sands and it’s not all Alberta.
